چکیده

Developing the thermodynamics of nanoscale friction is needed in a wide range tribological applications, where key objective to optimally control energy dissipation. Here we show that modern stochastic allows us interpret measurements obtained by force microscopy, which standard tool for investigating frictional properties materials, terms basic concepts such as fluctuating work and entropy. We this identification heat produced during process an unambiguous measure thermodynamic irreversibility. have applied procedure quantify sliding broad velocity range, observe velocity-dependent scaling behavior, useful interpreting experimental outcomes.

Nanoscale friction and wear maps.

Friction and wear are part and parcel of all walks of life, and for interfaces that are in close or near contact, tribology and mechanics are supremely important. They can critically influence the efficient functioning of devices and components. Nanoscale friction force follows a complex nonlinear dependence on multiple, often interdependent, interfacial and material properties. Various studies...

Thermodynamics and kinetics of boundary friction

A deterministic theory describing the behavior of an ultrathin lubricant film between two atomically-smooth solid surfaces is proposed. For the description of lubricant state the parameter of excess volume arising due to chaotization of solid medium structure in the course of melting is introduced. Thermodynamic and shear melting is described consistently. Dependences of friction force on tempe...

Local nanoscale heating modulates single-asperity friction.

We demonstrate measurement and control of single-asperity friction by using cantilever probes featuring an in situ solid-state heater. The heater temperature was varied between 25 and 650 °C (tip temperatures from 25 ± 2 to 120 ± 20 °C). Heating caused friction to increase by a factor of 4 in air at ∼ 30% relative humidity, but in dry nitrogen friction decreased by ∼ 40%. Higher velocity reduce...

Nanoscale friction: Distorted by the tip.

When two macroscopic bodies in contact slide, energy is dissipated. However, at the nanoscale, tiny amounts of energy can also be dissipated when the sliding bodies are not in contact with each other. Such non-contact form of friction — the origin of which has been associated with van der Waals (vdW) forces — has been measured with highly sensitive atomic force microscopy (AFM). In a friction f...
